Guiding Light : Maine’s Portland Headlight
The Portland Headlight
Commissioned on January 10th, 1971, at just 80 feet tall and 101 feet above sea level. Its beacon released a glow over the Gulf of Maine. This lighthouse has seen its fair share of changes throughout its cycle. From height changes In 1883 where it was raised by 20 feet, then in 1865 lowered by 20 feet, and one more time in 1885 was restored back to its original height of 80 feet. Then on the eve of Christmas 1886 the lighthouse would see its first shipwreck by the Annie C. Maguire which ran aground at the base of the lighthouse, luckily all crew were saved by the lighthouse keeper. Today the lighthouse still stands as the longest operated lighthouse to date.
